Honors Art: Syllabus – Spring 2012
Summary of Course Content:
This course is for students with high motivation in further developing individual interest and skills in various forms of artistic expression. Students will investigate contextual perspectives of visual communication and visual culture while developing their own aesthetic and artistic voice. Preparation of the artist’s portfolio and other individual projects will be emphasized for students who are taking these courses with the intent of pursuing a career in the field of art. Outside assignments are required. In a studio setting, students will develop their skills both two and three-dimensionally, using multi-media and digital forms of expression. In addition to studio-based investigations students are expected to: (a) build and maintain a website that will serve as an on-line portfolio of all class activities, (b) produce six Community Connection assignments (three for each marking period), (c) produce twelve sketchbook assignments (six for each marking period), (d) respond to ongoing writing assignments and (e) participate in the annual WSD Art Show. Students are expected to monitor the course website and calendar for assignments, due dates and commentary.
Standards for the Course (Competencies to be achieved):
This course is designed to address the Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
General categories include:
- Production, Performance and Exhibition (9.1)
- Historical and Cultural Contexts (9.2)
- Critical Response (9.3)
- Aesthetic Response (9.4)
Class Format:
Students will attend class daily and are expected to actively participate in all aspects of the course including cleanup. Students are expected to be on task from bell to bell in single period classes as well as double period classes. Double period students should not expect a “break” at the bell between periods. School policies outlined in the student handbook regarding behavior and technology will be honored in the classroom.
Course Requirements:
In addition to studio-based investigations students are expected to:
- Build and maintain a WordPress website that will serve as an on-line portfolio of all class activities. Formatting instructions will be followed.
- Produce six Community Connection assignments (three for each marking period). Formatting instructions will be followed.
- Produce twelve Sketchbook assignments (six for each marking period).
- Respond to ongoing writing assignments.
- Participate in the annual WSD Art Show (semester final).
- Students are expected to monitor the course website and calendar (https://davidtmiller.wordpress.com) for assignments, due dates and commentary.
Grading:
- 50% Studio work
- 25% Academic work
- 25% Sketchbook
Unexcused or frequent absences/tardiness, failure to complete assignments, or late submission of assignments will negatively impact grade.

Summary of Course Content:
Portfolio is a rigorous course of study designed for students who wish to pursue art as a career or to focus on an area of concentration. Students will concentrate upon the areas of their working portfolio that need strengthening. The course will also provide students with the ability to explore and research their personal aesthetic through supervised study. Students are to present on-going independent project proposals, post bi-weekly progress reports and to self-assess at the end of each marking period.
